Local Anesthetics

Are those agents which causes loss of sensation
in a particular region of the body without
loss of conciousness.

Drug Classification
(On the basis of duration of action)

Short acting: Procaine
Moderately long acting : Cocaine, Lidocaine, Prilocaine
Long acting : Tetracaine, Bupivacaine, Dibucaine

(On the basis of their clinical use)

*Infiltration anesthesia:
Lidocaine

*Surface anesthesia:
Lignocaine
Benzacaine
Tetracaine
Dibucaine

*Intravenous surgical anesthesia:

*Spinal Anesthesia:

Short duration of action (20-45 minutes)
