Oral Antidiabetics Drugs

Oral antidiabetic drugs or oral hypoglycemic drugs are those drugs which is used to control diabetes where insulin therapy not works!

Oral Anti diabetic agents are:
1. Insulin secretogogues.
2. Buguamides.
3. Thiazolidinediones.
4. Alpha glucosidase inhibitors.


1. Insulin secretogogues:
a.Sulponyl ureas---
(1st generation)
Tolbutamide
Tolazamide
Chlorpropamide
Acetohexamide.

(2nd generation)
Glyburide
Glibenclamide
Glipizide
Glimepiride

b. Meglitinides
Ripaglinide
Nateglinide


2. Buguamides:
Metformin
Phenformin
Buformin.

3. Thiazolidinediones.
Pioglitazone
Rosiglitazone
Troglitazone.

4. Alpha glucosidase inhibitors:
Acarbose
Miglitol.


Here,  Biguamides are also called Euglycemic drugs because it decrease blood glucose level in a certain limits which indicates normal blood glucose level.  It doesnot cause hypoglycemia.
