Insulin preparation

Insulin is a small protein containg two polypeptide chain connected by disulfide bonds.

key points:
*Insulin can be exists as- monomer, dimer, hexamer.
*It is stored in the granules of pancreatic B-cell.
*Monomer is the biological active form of insulin.
*Molecular weight of insulin is 5808.

Now Insulin Preparation :

*Rapid acting insulin.
*Short acting insulin.
*Intermediate acting insulin.
*Pre-mixed insulin.
*Long acting insulin.

*Rapid acting insulin:
Insulin lispro
Insulin Aspart
Insulin Glulisine.

*Short acting insulin:
Regular Novolin R
Regular Humulin R
Velosulin
Regular Exubera.

*Intermediate acting insulin:
NPH Humulin N
NPH Novolin N.

*Pre-mixed insulin:
Novolin 70/30
Humulin 70/30
50/50 NPL
75/25 NPL
70/30 NPA

(here NPL=neutral protamine lispro.
NPA=neutral protamine aspart.)

*Long acting insulin:
Insulin determir
Insulin glargine.

Pre-mixed insulin is produced by combination of regular, intermediate,  short acting insulin, that's why it is given to the patients at 1 dose within 24 hours!
